I had the honor to DJ Steve and Aimee Hubble’s wedding at the U of M union on 7/5/2008. I’ve been a DJ for over 13 years and I have to say this was one of the best wedding’s I’ve ever had the pleasure of hosting.
I do have to give a huge amount of credit to Steve and Aimee on their planning of events. They did something that I have never seen before but it turned out to be the one thing that turned their wedding into a high turnout on the dance floor.
During my contact call with Aimee and Steve they told me they wanted to do the introductions then go right to the bridal dance, father/daughter, and son/mother. I have seen this before and it works well, however this is where their ingenious planning came into play. Steve and Aimee asked me to have everyone stand-up, come out to the floor and dance to Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison.
At first everyone was looking around the room not knowing what to do but when they looked over and saw Aimee and Steve jamming to the music the guests starting to get more relaxed. By the time the song was over everyone was laughing, smiling, and dancing like crazy. I then asked everyone to look around the room and said, “Notice all the people on dance floor. You are going to want to stay all night long because this is how packed floor will turn out and how much fun this night is going to be. You won’t want to miss it”.
And it was true. By the end of the night there were 80-90% of the bride and groom’s guests on the dance floor having a ball. There was even a table of Nuclear Engineers that had taken their ties off and wrapped them around their heads like Rambo just going crazy.
I feel that by just having the guests come out and dance to 1 song before dinner did a number of things. It was a fantastic ice-breaker, it showed people where the party was going to be, no-one had a excuse to not get on the dance floor (ate too much, drank too much, etc), and it got people moving so they could digest their dinner better.
Aimee and Steve, if you are reading this, I have to say you did a great job and from a Host perspective, your wedding was top notch. Thank you again for having me.
